Vincent Cafarelli, a mainstay in the NY animation industry for more than six decades, died of natural causes in Brooklyn on Dec. 1. He was 81. He eventually came to work as an animator-director at nearly all of the major studios in Manhattan including UPA, Gifford Animation, Stars and Stripes Prods. (where he directed and animated over 300 spot commercials) and Perpetual Motion Pictures. Matt Damon and Tony Gilroy: How Your 'Bourne' Feud Sausage is Made
Last week, Matt Damon made waves when he was quoted as saying that Tony Gilroy -- the credited screenwriter on all three 'Bourne' films and the director of the upcoming 'Bourne Legacy' -- handed in a script for 'The Bourne Ultimatum' that was "unreadable." Said the star to GQ, "This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay and it would be game over for that dude. It's terrible. It's really embarrassing. He was having a go, basically, and he took his money and left." Harsh words! Ones that Damon immediately regretted, telling GQ that it was "douchey" of him to go on-the-record with his displeasure in Gilroy. The Damon quasi-apology tour continued on the KCRW show 'The Business,' where Damon told host -- and THR reporter -- Kim Masters that the reason for his outburst had to do with 'Bourne' being shoved in his face while on the set of 'Elysium' in Vancouver. "[The offices] opened up right outside my trailer," he said. "I was seeing this every day, and then I came back to NY and did this interview and kind of blurted it out. ... It was idiotic of me to say anything. At the end of the day, it's between me and Tony, and we'll figure it out or we won't." Damon is hoping that he figures things out. Despite professing confidence in the Gilroy-directed 'Bourne Legacy' and star Jeremy Renner, he hopes to return to the series as Jason Bourne in the future. "I think if ['Bourne Legacy'] doesn't work, we can just ignore it and pretend it didn't happen, and that'd be fine. But I expect that it will work and only help us if we did another one, which I'd love to do." That other one is likely contingent on director Paul Greengrass, with whom Damon has made two 'Bourne' films. It is largely assumed that Damon won't do another 'Bourne' without him. Foreign Box Office: 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning - Part I' Dips 47 Percent but nonetheless No. 1
Everything started having a tweet. On November. 3, the state Grammy Honours Twitter, whose handle is @TheGRAMMYs, sent a note to the 208,000 fans which read:our editor recommendsFoo Fighters' Six Grammy Nominations Put Analog Recording Back around the MapKanye West Places blame Themself for Grammy SnubTV Rankings: Grammy Nominations Concert Develops from 2010, Fox's 'Teenage Daughter' Off and away to Fair StartGrammy Attacker and Stylish-Hop Ad Guy Steve Stoute around the 'Tanning of America' (Q&A)Arcade Fire Manager Responds To Steve Stoute, Describes Grammy Appearance That do u predict the getting back band is going to be @ #GRAMMYnoms? http://grm.my/vH7p3Y Performs this hint make u wanna "Jump" & "Dance the Evening Away"? The 140-character missive came hrs following a pr release was released through the Recording Academy announcing its annual one-hour nominations special (broadcast on CBS since 2008) and promising "a unique live announcement from the truly legendary group regarding historic band reunion set to occur around the GRAMMY stage on February. 12, 2012." In due haste, the media started taking a chance regarding who the surprise act might be also it did not take lengthy before Van Halen's title emerged with one industry website, Htifix.com, going to date regarding place it available. Also it made sense: at that time -- and since, really -- these were this guitar rock band most abundant in reunion buzz. Together again with frontman David Lee Roth, the legendary arena rockers were near to signing a recording contract with a brand new label (initially rumored to get along with Columbia but landing at Interscope) after 4 decades at Warner Bros., and delivering their first album together because the monstrous 1984. Selection spot to reveal a possible release date or perhaps a first public performance than in a Grammys event? Then when the tweet made an appearance at 5:45pm on November. 3 most abundant in Van Halen-apparent hint imaginable along with a connect to the Hitfix story, it had been basically a fait accompli that guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his bass-playing boy Wolfgang, who required over for Michael Anthony in 2006, drummer Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth could be present at La' Nokia Theater on November. 30. STORY: Grammy Honours: Complete Listing of Nominees Obviously, nothing from the sort really happened throughout the public special. There is no real surprise announcement, nor was there a look and feel by an "legendary band." Rather, the nominations concert offered a couple of from the Grammys' signature combinations -- Rhianna with Sugarland, Usher with Valerie Simpson -- together with a performance based on country beginners This Guitar Rock Band Perry along with a stylish hop collective composed of Grandmaster Expensive, LL Awesome J, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Melle Mel and Scorpio, who carried out Furious Five's 1982 classic "The Content.Inch In a press conference rigtht after the broadcast, Recording Academy leader Neil Portnow was requested concerning the Van Halen no-show by Melinda Newman, the Hitfix editor who first authored concerning the rumor along with a former Billboard bureau chief. His response: "We spoken about getting something on the program tonight that was destined to be particularly in regards to a reunion and kind of announcing it. What went down really is easy -- you may already know, on the planet of creativeness things are fluid so along the way of discussions that we've been getting by having an expectation that possibly we'd attend a place tonight in which the artist involved and that we could be continuing to move forward and really being prepared to announce, they weren't quite at that time. So considering the fact that it's live television, we move ahead, we visit the next act, it's rock-n-roll and so forth. That being stated, i was genuine concerning the intention and that we were genuine about discussions, now the time period moves just a little further along and that we'll see what goes on on February. 12." A genuinely evasive commenter, in Portnow's non-speak, he never addresses Van Halen by title, ongoing to perpetuate a rumor that his organization had essentially already backed with this initial tweet. However the following morning, another tale was told as Moving Stone thought and also the La Occasions reportedthat this guitar rock band never was Van Halen, but instead the Beach Boys who've reunited its four making it through people, John Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston, for any 50th anniversary tour because of start in summer time 2012. Inside a situation of fortuitous timing, the band's last semi-completed effort, Smile, recorded in 1966, was launched by Capitol Records on November. 1 because the Smile Periods, using the full backing of four people. STORY:Grammy Nominations: Through the Amounts Indeed, the Beach Boys really are a Grammys no-brainer, too, and Wilson has themself made an appearance at a number of Recording Academy occasions through the years. The songwriter and producer being honored in 2004 because the Musicares Person of the season, the official Grammy function and fundraising event that can help support music artists in need of assistance. So to create a Beach Boys announcement as well as have a performance around the Grammys also makes sense. Based on the LA Occasions, talks using the Beach Boys fell apart 48 hrs prior to the show, but that does not negate the first Grammys tweet, which, essentially, behaved like a cut down pr release nevertheless Van Halen could be there. The succession of occasions stands for, all over again, Twitter'spower and speed of broadcast. All of this secrecy and confusion gives bear a nagging question: was mtss is a flippant tweet or did the Grammys intentionally launch a untrue stories campaign to find the media and as a result audiences -- included in this, lots of Van Halen fans -- to tune to their We're Music nominations special? With rankings up 12%, it certainly labored, but when we are all getting used, should not the Grammys a minimum of buy us breakfast each morning? Some tips about what we all know: nothing. A resource inside the Van Halen camping informs The Hollywood Reporter the band were never scheduled to look around the program which this can be a classic situation of "the web gone crazy." However the insider was hard-pressed to describe the Grammys tweet, revealing the band was equally miffed. The Grammys didn't react to THR's request further explanation of Portnow's comments. Newman, who THR also arrived at to, rejected to comment. PHOTOS: Top Ten Greatest Compensated Artists However that we have all released, pontificated and perpetuated, who's the champion of the pointless exercise? Van Halen, who received untold levels of publicity throughout a period when these were settling a lucrative new recording contract -- and justifiably so since clearly the anticipation for any new Van Halen album, tour and all sorts of the accouterments that include a great-scale reunion have arrived at feverish proportions. Who manages to lose? Van Halen's fans who updated right into a 60-minute kudos fest and also the nearest they were given to seeing real rock 'n roll was once the Foo Fighters' Wasting Light was listed being an Album of the season contender. The Beach Boys lose, too, if they are doing show up on the Grammys this season, their title and Van Halen's will in the end live side-by-side in subsequent press reviews, taking from the impact from the announcement. And also the Recording Academy does not leave the hoopla untouched, either. Using the knowning that the business comes with an honours show to advertise along with a buzz to construct, should which come at the fee for honesty? If Academy professionals understood that Van Halen never was in discussions to look, is not it now time they deomonstrate the reality in certain capacity and set an finish towards the forum madness? Or just be straight with someone? Anybody? Maybe marketing executive Steve Stoute had the best idea when he required the Grammys to task this past year, investing $40,000 to position a full-page open letter within the NY Occasions. His gripe: the Grammys lost-of-touch with popular music and used what they are called of celebrity artists like Attacking Young Boys and Eminem (the previous lost Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding, the second lost Album of the season to Arcade Fire) to lure audiences for their broadcast and ultimately leave them disappointed. Seem familiar? But all hope isn't lost in which the various gamers are worried, you will find there's solution: "California Women" as carried out through the unlikely pairing of, yes, Van Halen and also the Beach Boys, lest we forget that David Lee Roth obtained an enormous solo career hit using the Beach Boys' 1965 hit, reaching No. 3 around the Billboard Hot 100 together with his 1985 version (see video below). And permanently measure, the Grammys can throw Katy Perry within the mix. Now that's worth tuning set for. Fantastic news, west coast Potter fans! You can stop saving up for that pricey trip to Orlando because Universal is planning on opening a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter location at Universal Studios Hollywood. The question is: How long will you have to wait to sip your first novelty cup of butterbeer? According to the L.A. Times, Universal doesn’t expect to open the park until at least 2015. The company is expected to reach a deal with Warner Bros., the studio behind the Potter film franchise, within the next few weeks. It is not yet known where Universal Studios Hollywood will fit the Wizarding World, which features an impressively detailed Hogsmeade Village (complete with Honeyduke’s candy store, Three Broomsticks Inn and butterbeer carts), Hogwarts castle (which houses the Forbidden Journey ride) and two other attractions — the Dragon Challenge and Flight of the Hippogriff. 'Mad Max' Might Get New Trilogy, Two Video Games
In Hollywood, trilogies are the new sequel. So it should come as no surprise that George Miller, creator of the original "Mad Max" series, has a new trilogy in the works for the franchise. The first film in the new series, "Mad Max: Fury Road," has long had Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron attached as its leads, but that flick is only the first in three films Miller has already written. In an interview with the Financial Times, Miller admitted that the trilogy was a natural progression of the writing process. "We started with ['Fury Road'], but we then started to do a second story and a third. Weve written the script for the second and almost finished the third. We never intended to, they were part of the exploration of the characters," he said. Of course, first "Fury Road" actually has to be made. The flick has been notoriously delayed, first last summer, again in March and then again recently because of unexpected weather conditions in Australia. So, presumably, as long as "Fury Road" finally goes in front of the camera and makes a profit, we might get to see Miller's entire new vision. In addition to the film, Miller also said that a "Mad Max" videogame is in the works. Apparently Miller and Warner Bros are teaming up to have a studio in Sweden develop the game. "With the governments support we can immediately go forward with two games, Miller's partner Doug Mitchell said in the interview. "Warner Bros is standing by, willing to do 'Fury Road;' the incentive would bring it back here in a NY minute. It's not immediately obvious but the potential in the video games sector is massive." Can you get behind a new "Mad Max" trilogy and video game(s)? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

'The Dark Dark night Rises' Occupy Wall Street Shoot: Why It Did not Happen
Recently, a rumor appeared that director Christopher Nolan would make use of the Occupy Wall Street movement to assist shoot moments for 'The Dark Dark night Increases.' Based on the La Occasions, the protesters were not likely to be written in to the movie, but would simply get used as "a backdrop or perhaps a stand-set for something which already is available within the film." That little bit of Batman gossip has since been destroyed, however in a job interview with Indiewire, 'Dark Dark night Rises' star Matthew Modine accepted how close Nolan had arrived at filming at OWS, and why it never happened. Based on Modine, The knowledge of Christopher Nolan and the incredible team was that, although it appeared like smart to give [the protestors] an chance for work, to provide them money, it might send a dreadful message. In the finish during the day, we are creating a movie. What is happening lower there's more essential than that. To co-opt what is happening there and round the country ... we did not wish to trivialize it. It had been more essential to respect what they are doing rather than do anything whatsoever that may potentially trivialize the political situation downtown. Regardless of what your emotions are concerning the Occupy protests, Nolan most likely designed a good decision. Zuccotti Park continues to be -Up until early today, that's -- chaotic. You never know what presenting a large-budget production like 'The Dark Dark night Rises' might have completed to the nearby area? Mind to Indiewire to see the entire interview with Modine. Archie Panjabi Heats Up CBS Drama 'The Good Wife'
NY (AP) Apart from "Mad Men" in its 1960s setting, most TV dramas shy from showing anyone with cigarettes. But that doesn't mean Kalinda Sharma isn't constantly smoking on "The Good Wife." No cigarettes are involved, mind you, nor are they needed by this steamy in-house investigator at the Chicago law firm of Lockhart Gardner. With her implacable shrewdness, sass and sexuality, Kalinda heats up every scene she's in.No wonder she has emerged as a viewer favorite among the many colorful characters populating this CBS drama. And no wonder Archie Panjabi, who last year won an Emmy for her portrayal of Kalinda, can hold her own in a robust cast of actors who include series star Julianna Margulies as well as Christine Baranski, Josh Charles, Matt Czuchry, Alan Cumming and Chris Noth. ("The Good Wife" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST.)"I'm not just a woman in a pair of boots," says Panjabi, describing her character with delicious understatement.Along with her trademark knee-high boots, Kalinda is distinguished by the tough-gal wardrobe snugly sheathing her petite frame and, at the same time, by her defiant composure little if anything throws her, stops her (including ethics or legal niceties), or penetrates her well-defended shell.Adding to the intrigue of Kalinda is her matter-of-fact bisexuality, and her exotic but so-far-unexamined ethnic origins. To its credit, "The Good Wife" makes nothing of the fact that the actress chosen to play her is Indian and, though British-born, has adopted for Kalinda a throaty, Americanized purr that obscures any regional identity. In short, Kalinda cannot be categorized. She is who she is: a source of fascination."I think that's the way forward," says Panjabi. "You don't focus on the differences, you don't make an issue of them you just present them."Meanwhile, the enigmatic Kalinda will have a few more layers peeled away in coming episodes."I've looked at the script and gone, 'Oh my God. Really? Is "The Good Wife" going to go here?' And they went there," she teases. "Playing Kalinda definitely keeps me on my feet."The 39-year-old Panjabi, whose birth name is Archana, knew from a tender age that she wanted to be an actress, "and I said no one would stop me from doing it."Coming from an Indian family and seeing the differences between them and our English neighbors, the differences in cultures always fascinated me," she says. "That's probably the source of my desire to earn a living out of being different people. There's nothing more challenging or exciting than being able to get into the heart and soul of another human being, and show that to the audience convincingly, from head to toe."She landed roles on British television and made her film debut as a soccer-loving tomboy in the romantic comedy "East Is East." Subsequent films include "Traitor," ''Bend It Like Beckham," ''The Constant Gardener," ''A Good Year" and "A Mighty Heart."Along the way she wed Rajesh Nihalani, a bespoke tailor with whom she lives in London when professional pursuits aren't intruding. But three seasons ago, she was invited to be part of a prospective NY-based TV series, a blend of courtroom procedural, high-stakes office battleground and domestic melodrama. In the shorthand of casting, the character she was asked to play might be described as a Bollywood version of a Sam Spade detective with a feminist twist. "It's a throwback to the past, but a modern version of it," says Panjabi, who, in her portrayal, makes much more of Kalinda than any simple recipe."At first, the role kind of scared me," she concedes. "Kalinda seemed like somebody who used her looks as opposed to her mind, and I was nervous that she would have a limited range. But then they also made her incredibly smart."Panjabi, who in person is soft-spoken, with raven hair to her shoulders, a hearty laugh and sparkling eyes, began building Kalinda from the ground up that is, her boots, "which was something I was particular about."She says she was given the choice of playing Kalinda with a British or American accent, and with hair up or down. (She chose her hair tightly bound up as a sign of Kalinda's fierce self-control. Besides, "She didn't need her hair down to feel sexy.")When the pilot episode was shot, she recalls, "I didn't want her to dress in a sexy way. I was keen for her to be in jeans and a T-shirt, as if she didn't care what she looked like."But once shooting resumed for the series' first season, the producers wanted her attire to express her sexuality. She kept the leather jacket and the boots (which are not just for vanity: "I can really run in them," Panjabi says), adding a snug skirt and tights to what became her signature style."The clothes and the look definitely help me perform the character," says Panjabi, adding that, despite all her differences with Kalinda, they share one trait: "There's very few people that intimidate me," she says with a laugh. "That's a little part of me in Kalinda coming through."In the past, friendship-averse Kalinda had begun to be chummy with Alicia Florrick (played by Margulies), her law firm co-worker. But their connection was dashed when Alicia learned that not only had Kalinda previously worked for her husband (Noth), but had also slept with him.On this Sunday's episode, Kalinda has an unexpected sexual encounter with another character while investigating a case, in a story arc that promises to heat up for her. That suits Panjabi fine."There are so many smart women I know who are unafraid to celebrate their sexuality," she says. "Kalinda is sexy, yet people are drawn to her also because of the way she thinks. She's really struck a chord with women as well as men, and I don't think we see that kind of character on TV as much as we should."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. What Happy Madison Intern is Behind the Sad, Sad Jack and Jill Twitter Page?
comments: 4 || add yours It’s Friday, opening day for Sony’s legendarily crapped-upon Adam Sandler vehicle Jack and Jill — so what better time to launch a Jack and Jill Twitter feed than today, amirite? So the timing’s not so good; at the time of this writing the page is just a few hours old. But the Tweets?? PRICELESS. Trust me: Skip the movie, hold onto your $10, and instead give it to the poor Happy Madison intern you might imagine slaving away in the office on a Friday trying to drum up interest in the abysmal comedy one unintentionally hilarious awful Tweet at a time. After the jump, a selection of the mind-blowingly best-worst Jack and Jill Tweets thus far. You’re welcome. Alcon to co-finance 'What to Expect'
Alcon Entertainment has agreed to co-finance Lionsgate's "What to Expect When You're Expecting" -- its first such investment outside Warner Bros. The two companies announced Thursday that they will be equally sharing the production and marketing costs on the film. The announcement was made jointly by Lionsgate's motion picture group president Joe Drake and Alcon toppers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Pic, which follows several couples through their pregnancies, is scheduled for domestic release on May 11. Alcon noted that it's aiming to ramp up its film business. "Alcon's participation as 'passive financiers' of the project signifies the company's strategy to generate additional film output, and as such Johnson and Kosove will not take producer credits," the announcement said. Lionsgate noted that it's partnered financially on previous films with Lakeshore Entertainment, Relativity and Crest Animation. "This co-financing deal is ideal for both of us because it aligns our interests; there is a true sharing of risk capital, including P&A on films that we both see great value in making," Drake said. "This deal provides a way for Lionsgate to pursue risk mitigation, while allowing Alcon to have broader access to commercial content beyond the product they develop themselves."
"Expecting" is directed by Kirk Jones ("Nanny McPhee") and stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock. Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

Paramount Sues For Ownership of Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita' (Exclusive)
Getty Images Paramount Pictures is going to court to prove that it owns the copyright to Frederico Fellini's classic film, La Dolce Vita. Since the film's release in 1960, ownership on the film has changed hands several times, leading to a complicated chain-of-title dispute that Paramount wishes to put to rest once and for all.our editor recommendsDoes anybody own Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita'?Restored 'La Dolce Vita' Returning to Italy's Big Screen On Thursday, Paramount filed a complaint in California federal court against International Media Films, which also claims to be the valid copyright owner of the Fellini classic. Last year,La Dolce Vitacelebrated its 50th anniversary, and both companies took advantagewith theatrical re-releases andspecial edition DVDs and Blu-Rays. Paramount received cease-and-desist letters, leading the studio yesterday to file an intriguing case thatfigures to stretch across oceans and time. Although this lawsuit is new, it's not the first time that the copyright toLa Dolce Vitahas been in question. In 2007, International Media Films suedLucas Entertainment, which had released a porn version entitled Michael Lucas'La Dolce Vita. Before that dispute got to the challenging issue of whether there was substantial similarity in orgy scenes, the question arose whether International Media really held a valid chain of title. The film's ownership has been polygamous over the years, to say the least, and so, many copyright experts and document examiners were trotted out by the parties to figure out the 50-year history of the film's protectors. International Media raised a theory of transfer that goes something like this:the original producers of the film assigned the rights in 1962 to Cinemat, S.A., which transferred rights in 1980 to Hor A.G., which transferred rights the following year to Oriental Films, which transferred rights in 1998 to Cinestampa, which then transferred rights in 2001 to International Media. A year later, International Media filed a registration with the US Copyright Office on a restoration copy of the Fellini film. Lucas Entertainment disputed the authenticity of some of those agreements and offered an alternative story line that goes something like this: The original producers of the film assigned distribution rights in the United States in 1961 to Astor Pictures, which transferred rights in 1966 to Ardisco Financial Corp., which later sold rights to Republic Entertainment, which was the predecessor-in-interest to Melange Pictures, which filed a restoration copyright in 1996. For more than a decade, Paramount has controlled Melange's film library. In other words, a true head-scratcher, and it's not surprising that in March 2010, when considering this case, NY federal judgeJohn Koeltl put his hands up in near resignation, saying thatInternational Media had failed in its burden to show a valid chain of title. Judge Koelt wouldn't say who owned the film. Does anybody? "In fact, it is possible for the Fellini film to be in the public domain," he wrote in an opinion. Despite the ruling, Paramount says that International Media continues to make claims on the film and has sent cease-and-desist letters, not only to Paramount but also to the Paramount's theatrical partners who have been licensed to exhibit the film. Paramount still believes it has valid custody over the film and is now seeking a declaration of its ownership title. Represented by David Halberstadter at Katten Muchin Rosenman, Paramount is also seeking damages for International Media's alleged copyright infringement. To complicate matters even further, it's possible that a coming U.S. Supreme Court ruling could make this entire dispute moot. On October 5, the high court heard arguments in Golan v. Holder, which examines whether millions of 20th Century masterpieces were wrongfully taken out of the public domain when the U.S. government led an international treaty that harmonized many intellectual property laws around the globe. By signing these treaties, foreign authors were given the opportunity to restore copyright on many works. The plaintiff is alleging that all of these works taken out of the public domain were a violation of the free speech rights of the American public. It's possible that that the Supreme Court could restore many copyrighted works to the public domain, including, yes, Frederico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. Inadmissible Evidence
Douglas Hodge is really a middle-aged lawyer living the worst 24 hrs of his existence in Jamie Lloyds staging of Inadmissible Evidence.
A Donmar Warehouse presentation of the play in 2 functions by John Osborne. Directed by Jamie Lloyd.Bill Maitland - Douglas Hodge
Hudson - Daniel Ryan
Johnson/Maples - Al Weaver
Mrs Garnsey - Serena Evans
Shirley - Karen Gillan
Pleasure - Amy Morgan
Liz - Esther Hall
Jane Maitland - Alice SandersWhen is really a play not really a play? When it is an aria, as well as in the situation of John Osborne's 1964 drama "Inadmissible Evidence," a 2-and-a-half-hour mad scene. An endurance test to have an actor, within the wrong hands it risks being exactly the same to have an audience. But director Jamie Lloyd and, especially, Douglas Hodge get the best possible situation with this problematic fantasia. Seeing Hodge's blistering performance is much like being not able to tear yourself from a stand-up in enchanting meltdown. As with Simon Gray's more famous "Butley" which adopted within this play's wake seven years later, "Inadmissible Evidence" dispenses with plot in support of showing the worst twenty-four hrs within the central character's existence, with key gamers having to pay visits as to the comes down to a monologue. In the opening, as Hodge's middle-aged lawyer Bill Maitland is harangued in the ramshackle office with a judge (Daniel Ryan) perched atop a filing cabinet along with a clerk from the court (Al Weaver) sitting on a chair, it's obvious that naturalism is this is not on recption menus. By having an extended, unearthly groan of discomfort from Hodge, work proper springs to existence. Much-mistreated secretaries move interior and exterior the firing line and Ryan and Weaver return as fellow people from the firm reaching the finish of the tether using their irascible but desperate boss, who never misses an opportunity to sneer their way. Lloyd shapes proceedings by heeding Osborne's indication that this can be a dream play. We all know where we're because of Soutra Gilmour's terrific period-style group of a large, paper-thrown, dull inner office with floor-to-ceiling home windows searching towards a wall of great importance and-mistreated secretaries. However the anchoring supplied by her immediately identifiable setting frees Lloyd to lift Hodge's performance towards the horrifyingly surreal. Beneath James Farncombe's marvelously queasy light making its way through bleary office skylights, Hodge counter-without effort scampers with the opening section with cunning comedy. He enables us to determine that his character is at sight of crack-up, but pills, whiskey and bravado are seeing him through. Sweating and bursting from his ill-fitting three-piece suit, the only real connect to Hodge's newest stage role -- his Tony-winning Albin in "La Cage aux Folles" -- is his devastating timing. He changes direction of thought at warp-speed and brings together the comedian's gift for having the ability to stretch time apparently indefinitely. For a lot of his almost non-stop tirade he's the crowd through the throat with everybody playing catch-up, because both he and also the character think so thrillingly fast. The rate of his performance (within an already trimmed text) isn't virtuosic revealing but an ideal realization from the means by which Maitland is permanently away from home from themself. Whenever he stops to look at his appalling associations together with his wife, his mistress, his co-employees and clients, he risks drowning within the afraid self-loathing that fuels his every waking moment. Maitland's appalling sights around the women in the existence should make the play unwatchable, but Hodge is really charming that his attitudes appear self-lacerating. The truly upsetting factor concerning the no-holds-bared performance is it shows a guy you never know themself frighteningly well but could do nothing at all about this. Shortly prior to the final section, he tries to pull themself together to assist Maples (Weaver), a customer charged with illegal homosexual behavior. To Maitland's silenced astonishment, Maples decides to plead guilty from pride (this really is 3 years before homosexuality was legalized within the U.K.). Weaver's high-chinned, superbly distilled portrayal includes a poised self-understanding that stands like a chilling rebuke to Maitland's emotional staggering. It silences him, and perfectly creates Maitland's final terrifying attack on his daughter. The applause that greets Hodge's ultimate collapse is really as disquieting because it is appropriate to so epic a performance.Sets and costumes, Soutra Gilmour lighting, James Farncombe seem and music, Ben and Max Ringham, production stage manager, Sunita Hinduja. Opened up, examined March. 18, 2011. Running time: 2 Hrs, 30 MIN. Contact David Benedict at benedictdavid@mac.com

We Live Here
Betty Gilpin, Oscar Isaac, Amy Irving, Mark Blum, Jessica Collins and Jeremy Shamos star in the tense family drama We Live Here.
A Manhattan Theater Club presentation of a play in two acts by Zoe Kazan. Directed by Sam Gold.Maggie - Amy Irving
Dinah - Betty Gilpin
Lawrence - Mark Blum
Sandy - Jeremy Shamos
Althea - Jessica Collins
Daniel - Oscar IsaacActor-playwright Zoe Kazan ("A Behanding in Spokane") sets the stage for a tense family drama in "We Live Here" when a gifted Juilliard student brings an unsuitable boyfriend home for her older sister's wedding. But despite some artful dodging by helmer Sam Gold, events never get past the foreplay stage, putting some very capable performers in the awkward position of having to look busy while spinning in place. From the looks of it, Manhattan Theater Club jumped the gun by mounting a mainstage production of this commissioned piece before it was in shape to come out of workshop. The handsome set that John Lee Beatty has designed for a family of academics living in a New England college town is so warm and inviting it's hard to believe that anyone who grew up in this homey environment would suffer much of a family tragedy. It's that tragedy that no one will talk about, but hangs heavily in the air until the Big Reveal in the final scene. By that time, it's far too late to put this intelligence to any practical dramatic use. The disclosure does, however, satisfy what seems to be the scribe's primary objective of explaining why her heroine is such a sourpuss. Jessica Collins ("Rubicon") bravely refuses to play bride-to-be Althea Bateman for sympathy, meaning the thesp makes no excuses for her character's moody behavior. Everyone else does, though, including Althea's high-strung mother, Maggie (the ever-charming Amy Irving), her doting father, Lawrence (Mark Blum, dependably solid), and her adoring fiance, Sandy (Jeremy Shamos, the go-to actor for sweet-guy roles). The one exception is Althea's younger sister, Dinah (Betty Gilpin, so self-contained she's almost scary). Dinah is the family genius, a gifted composer coming into her own at Julliard -- but so naive she thinks it's okay to bring her new boyfriend, Daniel (Oscar Isaac), to the wedding. As one of Dinah's Julliard instructors, 30-year-old Daniel does seem to be unsuitable boyfriend material for the 19-year-old student. But what makes the situation really awkward is his link to that tragedy no one will discuss. Still, a volatile situation does not a drama make, and Kazan seems unwilling to engage her characters in sustained dramatic conflicts. Instead of sending them into battle, she allows them to retreat behind torrents of evasive small talk and distracting stage business. As the mother of this hectic household, Maggie is given the most inane things to say and the most dubious chores (like opening the wedding presents) to perform. But each character is assigned some physical task (like painting a portrait) or conversational ploy (like holding forth on a point of Aristotelian philosophy) for avoiding an emotional showdown. Finally, after everyone is thoroughly exhausted from all that ducking and weaving, Kazan pulls a deus ex machina to put them out of their misery. Somewhere, the gods of dramaturgy are weeping.Set, John Lee Beatty; costumes, David Zinn; lighting, Ben Stanton; original music and sound, Ryan Rumery; production stage manager, David H. Lurie. Glam Slam: Xanadu Style Rules Again
First Published: October 11, 2011 3:57 PM EDT Credit: Access Hollywood Caption Access Hollywoods Anthony Ramos, Ryan Patterson, Cara Petry, Susan Moore and Joe Siyam celebrate at the Xanadu birthday bashLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- I went to the most awesome birthday party this past weekend it was literally a blast from the past! My friend Joe turned 40 and celebrated with a Xanadu themed Disco Roller Party- just the sound of that is pretty fab, right? It all started with the invites, which included a DVD of the Olivia Newton-John cult classic Xanadu, to inspire us for costume ideas. I admit- I did not do too well in the costume department. I could not think of anything to wear and just tried to be festive with a sparkly DVF jacket. I wish I had been more creative because there were some incredible outfits there. It was a sea of metallic spandexwhich in this case was a good thing! The birthday boy was dressed in a 70s white suita la Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Many of the women came in flowy dresses with headbands like in the film, or in sleek 80s workout gear like Olivia wore in her Lets Get Physical music video. We arrived at the Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale where Xanadu was being projected on one of the walls outside. We were greeted with the smell of In-N-Out Burgers - a truck was on hand to make them to order. Girls in pink satin outfits (which were replicas from Xanadus final scene) delivered the burgers to partygoers by skates, of course. There were Xanadu cookies, as well as cookies in the shape of roller skates. The snack bar was also open serving popcorn, candy, soda and any other rink food you could wish for. Everyone accessorized with glow-in-the- dark necklaces and bracelets. We had some laughs striking silly poses in front of a Xanadu themed backdrop and also for photo booth style pix that we got to take home. But the most fun was the skating. Im not exaggerating when I say I havent skated in DECADESand it showed! I was really rusty at first, but I got more comfortable with it. I didnt want to leave the floor and spent almost the entire night skating. My friend James, who rocked the 70s with his shorts, tube socks and huge sunglasses, kept skating up to me and saying, Are you living right now, or what? I said, I am not only living, I am winning! As if it wasnt fun enough to dance and skate to all the old disco hits (Hello Bad Girls!), there was also an Olivia Newton-John performer who sang and danced to Lets Get Physical and the theme from Xanadu. (Which I still keep singing in my headNow that we are here, Xanadu, Xan-a-du-oo-oo.) It was crazy how much planning went into this partyEvery single detail, down to the free tokens for the video games, was perfect. Happy Birthday, Joe! Well done, well done!
