'The Dark Dark night Rises' Occupy Wall Street Shoot: Why It Did not Happen
Recently, a rumor appeared that director Christopher Nolan would make use of the Occupy Wall Street movement to assist shoot moments for 'The Dark Dark night Increases.' Based on the La Occasions, the protesters were not likely to be written in to the movie, but would simply get used as "a backdrop or perhaps a stand-set for something which already is available within the film." That little bit of Batman gossip has since been destroyed, however in a job interview with Indiewire, 'Dark Dark night Rises' star Matthew Modine accepted how close Nolan had arrived at filming at OWS, and why it never happened. Based on Modine, The knowledge of Christopher Nolan and the incredible team was that, although it appeared like smart to give [the protestors] an chance for work, to provide them money, it might send a dreadful message. In the finish during the day, we are creating a movie. What is happening lower there's more essential than that. To co-opt what is happening there and round the country ... we did not wish to trivialize it. It had been more essential to respect what they are doing rather than do anything whatsoever that may potentially trivialize the political situation downtown. Regardless of what your emotions are concerning the Occupy protests, Nolan most likely designed a good decision. Zuccotti Park continues to be -Up until early today, that's -- chaotic. You never know what presenting a large-budget production like 'The Dark Dark night Rises' might have completed to the nearby area? Mind to Indiewire to see the entire interview with Modine. Archie Panjabi Heats Up CBS Drama 'The Good Wife'
NY (AP) Apart from "Mad Men" in its 1960s setting, most TV dramas shy from showing anyone with cigarettes. But that doesn't mean Kalinda Sharma isn't constantly smoking on "The Good Wife." No cigarettes are involved, mind you, nor are they needed by this steamy in-house investigator at the Chicago law firm of Lockhart Gardner. With her implacable shrewdness, sass and sexuality, Kalinda heats up every scene she's in.No wonder she has emerged as a viewer favorite among the many colorful characters populating this CBS drama. And no wonder Archie Panjabi, who last year won an Emmy for her portrayal of Kalinda, can hold her own in a robust cast of actors who include series star Julianna Margulies as well as Christine Baranski, Josh Charles, Matt Czuchry, Alan Cumming and Chris Noth. ("The Good Wife" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST.)"I'm not just a woman in a pair of boots," says Panjabi, describing her character with delicious understatement.Along with her trademark knee-high boots, Kalinda is distinguished by the tough-gal wardrobe snugly sheathing her petite frame and, at the same time, by her defiant composure little if anything throws her, stops her (including ethics or legal niceties), or penetrates her well-defended shell.Adding to the intrigue of Kalinda is her matter-of-fact bisexuality, and her exotic but so-far-unexamined ethnic origins. To its credit, "The Good Wife" makes nothing of the fact that the actress chosen to play her is Indian and, though British-born, has adopted for Kalinda a throaty, Americanized purr that obscures any regional identity. In short, Kalinda cannot be categorized. She is who she is: a source of fascination."I think that's the way forward," says Panjabi. "You don't focus on the differences, you don't make an issue of them you just present them."Meanwhile, the enigmatic Kalinda will have a few more layers peeled away in coming episodes."I've looked at the script and gone, 'Oh my God. Really? Is "The Good Wife" going to go here?' And they went there," she teases. "Playing Kalinda definitely keeps me on my feet."The 39-year-old Panjabi, whose birth name is Archana, knew from a tender age that she wanted to be an actress, "and I said no one would stop me from doing it."Coming from an Indian family and seeing the differences between them and our English neighbors, the differences in cultures always fascinated me," she says. "That's probably the source of my desire to earn a living out of being different people. There's nothing more challenging or exciting than being able to get into the heart and soul of another human being, and show that to the audience convincingly, from head to toe."She landed roles on British television and made her film debut as a soccer-loving tomboy in the romantic comedy "East Is East." Subsequent films include "Traitor," ''Bend It Like Beckham," ''The Constant Gardener," ''A Good Year" and "A Mighty Heart."Along the way she wed Rajesh Nihalani, a bespoke tailor with whom she lives in London when professional pursuits aren't intruding. But three seasons ago, she was invited to be part of a prospective NY-based TV series, a blend of courtroom procedural, high-stakes office battleground and domestic melodrama. In the shorthand of casting, the character she was asked to play might be described as a Bollywood version of a Sam Spade detective with a feminist twist. "It's a throwback to the past, but a modern version of it," says Panjabi, who, in her portrayal, makes much more of Kalinda than any simple recipe."At first, the role kind of scared me," she concedes. "Kalinda seemed like somebody who used her looks as opposed to her mind, and I was nervous that she would have a limited range. But then they also made her incredibly smart."Panjabi, who in person is soft-spoken, with raven hair to her shoulders, a hearty laugh and sparkling eyes, began building Kalinda from the ground up that is, her boots, "which was something I was particular about."She says she was given the choice of playing Kalinda with a British or American accent, and with hair up or down. (She chose her hair tightly bound up as a sign of Kalinda's fierce self-control. Besides, "She didn't need her hair down to feel sexy.")When the pilot episode was shot, she recalls, "I didn't want her to dress in a sexy way. I was keen for her to be in jeans and a T-shirt, as if she didn't care what she looked like."But once shooting resumed for the series' first season, the producers wanted her attire to express her sexuality. She kept the leather jacket and the boots (which are not just for vanity: "I can really run in them," Panjabi says), adding a snug skirt and tights to what became her signature style."The clothes and the look definitely help me perform the character," says Panjabi, adding that, despite all her differences with Kalinda, they share one trait: "There's very few people that intimidate me," she says with a laugh. "That's a little part of me in Kalinda coming through."In the past, friendship-averse Kalinda had begun to be chummy with Alicia Florrick (played by Margulies), her law firm co-worker. But their connection was dashed when Alicia learned that not only had Kalinda previously worked for her husband (Noth), but had also slept with him.On this Sunday's episode, Kalinda has an unexpected sexual encounter with another character while investigating a case, in a story arc that promises to heat up for her. That suits Panjabi fine."There are so many smart women I know who are unafraid to celebrate their sexuality," she says. "Kalinda is sexy, yet people are drawn to her also because of the way she thinks. She's really struck a chord with women as well as men, and I don't think we see that kind of character on TV as much as we should."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. What Happy Madison Intern is Behind the Sad, Sad Jack and Jill Twitter Page?
comments: 4 || add yours It’s Friday, opening day for Sony’s legendarily crapped-upon Adam Sandler vehicle Jack and Jill — so what better time to launch a Jack and Jill Twitter feed than today, amirite? So the timing’s not so good; at the time of this writing the page is just a few hours old. But the Tweets?? PRICELESS. Trust me: Skip the movie, hold onto your $10, and instead give it to the poor Happy Madison intern you might imagine slaving away in the office on a Friday trying to drum up interest in the abysmal comedy one unintentionally hilarious awful Tweet at a time. After the jump, a selection of the mind-blowingly best-worst Jack and Jill Tweets thus far. You’re welcome. Alcon to co-finance 'What to Expect'
Alcon Entertainment has agreed to co-finance Lionsgate's "What to Expect When You're Expecting" -- its first such investment outside Warner Bros. The two companies announced Thursday that they will be equally sharing the production and marketing costs on the film. The announcement was made jointly by Lionsgate's motion picture group president Joe Drake and Alcon toppers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Pic, which follows several couples through their pregnancies, is scheduled for domestic release on May 11. Alcon noted that it's aiming to ramp up its film business. "Alcon's participation as 'passive financiers' of the project signifies the company's strategy to generate additional film output, and as such Johnson and Kosove will not take producer credits," the announcement said. Lionsgate noted that it's partnered financially on previous films with Lakeshore Entertainment, Relativity and Crest Animation. "This co-financing deal is ideal for both of us because it aligns our interests; there is a true sharing of risk capital, including P&A on films that we both see great value in making," Drake said. "This deal provides a way for Lionsgate to pursue risk mitigation, while allowing Alcon to have broader access to commercial content beyond the product they develop themselves."
"Expecting" is directed by Kirk Jones ("Nanny McPhee") and stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock. Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

Paramount Sues For Ownership of Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita' (Exclusive)
Getty Images Paramount Pictures is going to court to prove that it owns the copyright to Frederico Fellini's classic film, La Dolce Vita. Since the film's release in 1960, ownership on the film has changed hands several times, leading to a complicated chain-of-title dispute that Paramount wishes to put to rest once and for all.our editor recommendsDoes anybody own Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita'?Restored 'La Dolce Vita' Returning to Italy's Big Screen On Thursday, Paramount filed a complaint in California federal court against International Media Films, which also claims to be the valid copyright owner of the Fellini classic. Last year,La Dolce Vitacelebrated its 50th anniversary, and both companies took advantagewith theatrical re-releases andspecial edition DVDs and Blu-Rays. Paramount received cease-and-desist letters, leading the studio yesterday to file an intriguing case thatfigures to stretch across oceans and time. Although this lawsuit is new, it's not the first time that the copyright toLa Dolce Vitahas been in question. In 2007, International Media Films suedLucas Entertainment, which had released a porn version entitled Michael Lucas'La Dolce Vita. Before that dispute got to the challenging issue of whether there was substantial similarity in orgy scenes, the question arose whether International Media really held a valid chain of title. The film's ownership has been polygamous over the years, to say the least, and so, many copyright experts and document examiners were trotted out by the parties to figure out the 50-year history of the film's protectors. International Media raised a theory of transfer that goes something like this:the original producers of the film assigned the rights in 1962 to Cinemat, S.A., which transferred rights in 1980 to Hor A.G., which transferred rights the following year to Oriental Films, which transferred rights in 1998 to Cinestampa, which then transferred rights in 2001 to International Media. A year later, International Media filed a registration with the US Copyright Office on a restoration copy of the Fellini film. Lucas Entertainment disputed the authenticity of some of those agreements and offered an alternative story line that goes something like this: The original producers of the film assigned distribution rights in the United States in 1961 to Astor Pictures, which transferred rights in 1966 to Ardisco Financial Corp., which later sold rights to Republic Entertainment, which was the predecessor-in-interest to Melange Pictures, which filed a restoration copyright in 1996. For more than a decade, Paramount has controlled Melange's film library. In other words, a true head-scratcher, and it's not surprising that in March 2010, when considering this case, NY federal judgeJohn Koeltl put his hands up in near resignation, saying thatInternational Media had failed in its burden to show a valid chain of title. Judge Koelt wouldn't say who owned the film. Does anybody? "In fact, it is possible for the Fellini film to be in the public domain," he wrote in an opinion. Despite the ruling, Paramount says that International Media continues to make claims on the film and has sent cease-and-desist letters, not only to Paramount but also to the Paramount's theatrical partners who have been licensed to exhibit the film. Paramount still believes it has valid custody over the film and is now seeking a declaration of its ownership title. Represented by David Halberstadter at Katten Muchin Rosenman, Paramount is also seeking damages for International Media's alleged copyright infringement. To complicate matters even further, it's possible that a coming U.S. Supreme Court ruling could make this entire dispute moot. On October 5, the high court heard arguments in Golan v. Holder, which examines whether millions of 20th Century masterpieces were wrongfully taken out of the public domain when the U.S. government led an international treaty that harmonized many intellectual property laws around the globe. By signing these treaties, foreign authors were given the opportunity to restore copyright on many works. The plaintiff is alleging that all of these works taken out of the public domain were a violation of the free speech rights of the American public. It's possible that that the Supreme Court could restore many copyrighted works to the public domain, including, yes, Frederico Fellini's La Dolce Vita.
